Founded in 1869 by multimillionaire Alexander Turney Stewart, who had a precise vision for the village. Due to that, unlike other neighboring towns, Garden City has very stringent zoning laws that were adopted to maintain the integrity of Stewart’s vision. Hence the village has maintained a sense of “orderly development” and today is noted as one of the most beautiful villages on Long Island.
