American poet, journalist, and essayist Walt Whitman was born in Huntington Station in 1819. His ancestors and family lived in the Huntington area for over 125 years. Today The Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site & Interpretive Center preserves his birth place and welcomes visitors year round. There are multiple areas to experience including the interpretive center, museum and event space. The museum is open daily from June 15 through Labor Day except for major holidays, and Wednesday through Sunday in the winter.
